Jacksonville State enters their final season at the FCS level as new head coach Rich Rodriguez steps into his first season as the head coach for the Gamecocks. The roster turnover has been high for the Gamecocks, but Jacksonville State landed one of the top transfers in the country in former Georgia offensive lineman Clay Webb.

Webb was a 5-star prospect out of Oxford, AL in the class of 2019. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound offensive lineman ranked as a Top-30 prospect in the country and was the #1 center in the country coming out of Oxford High School. Webb was one of two centers selected for the Under Armour All-American Game and was selected for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game as a senior. Webb was a two-time ASWA All-State Class 6A selection and was also named to USA Today All-USA First Team as a senior.

Webb held offers from Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, and multiple other top Power-5 programs. He announced his commitment to Georgia on December 10th and was an early enrollee for the Bulldogs. As a true freshman Webb was named the co-Scout Team Player of the Year for the Bulldogs, but only saw five games of action over his three seasons at Georgia.

Barton Simmons of 247Sports projected Webb to be a 2nd-3rd round draft pick coming out of high school. Webb’s biggest strength is his use of leverage and the versatility to play multiple positions along the offensive line. One of the major criticisms from scouts was that Webb needed to increase his weight to compete against the bigger defensive lineman in the SEC, but Webb should be able to make a huge impact for the Gamecocks over the next few seasons. He will have three years of eligibility for the Gamecocks.

Rick Trickett is the new offensive coach for the Gamecocks and played a large role in the recruitment of Webb. Trickett has developed over 30 NFL Draft picks over his 45+ years of coaching, while also having two entire offensive line units earning All-Conference honors in back-to-back seasons (Florida State 2012; 2013).
