Eastern Washington is looking to compete for their first Big Sky title since 2018 after a strong 10-3 season and a run to the 2nd round of the FCS Playoffs. The Eagles defense received a major commitment as former Washington State defensive back Alphonse Oywak announced his transfer to Eastern Washington on social media.

Oywak was a 4-star prospect out of Kentwood High School in the class of 2020. The 6-foot-2, 193-pound cornerback ranked as the 18th best cornerback in the country and the 8th best player in the state of Washington according to 247Sports. He was named to The Associated Press All-State Team and was a 1st Team 4A All-North Puget Sound League selection as a wide receiver and cornerback. He totaled 30 tackles, 4 interceptions, 5 fumble recoveries, 27 receptions, 550 receiving yards, and 6 touchdowns as senior. He was named a Red Chip Prospect by The Seattle Times as one of the Top-100 prospects in the state of Washington.

Oywak announced his commitment to Washington State over offers from Arizona, Oregon State, Boise State, and Nevada. He redshirted his freshman season at Washington State after only appearing in one game against USC. He saw action against Utah State in the 2021 season and totaled 3 tackles, but did not see action the rest of the season. Oywak announced his transfer in April after the conclusion of spring practice for the Cougars.

Oywak will look to compete for a starting spot in an experienced Eastern Washington secondary. The Eagles return multiple top contributors including Marlon Jones Jr., Demetrius Crosby Jr., and Tre Weed. Oywak be one of the biggest corners in the Eagles secondary and could be a major contributor for an Eastern Washington secondary that ranked Top-5 in the Big Sky last season in passing defense. Oywak will have four years of eligibility left at Eastern Washington.
