It’s finally that time of the year again, and I know that we’ve all been waiting for it. It’s time for the lowly college football bloggers that are finally comfortable outside of the cave they are tucked away in every February-July. As a result of this phenomenon, we finally get some very well-researched, educated articles that cover everything that us dumb fans need to know about the College Football Playoff dynamic.
Suddenly, it came to me. “Brandon, you have a special opportunity here. You’ve spent the better part of two decades now just being a dumb fan. You are newly introduced to the world of sports media, albeit, uninvited. You’re a special breed of dumb fan and sports journalist, you can give the people what they really want!”
So what was I to do with this new revelation? I think you all know. I present to you my very well-researched, extremely educated, scientifically proven odds for teams to make the College Football Playoff at this point in the season.
1. LSU: 1,000,000% chance
We’ll start with the team that has led the College Football Playoff rankings for the past two weeks. The obvious favorite at this point in the season are the Bayou Bengals. This team has an offense that is likely the most high powered one in the NCAA right now, Joe Burrow who is the Heisman front-runner, and a defense that doesn’t even need to show up to win games. Besides these, the only thing standing between this team and the Playoff are a few scrubs in Arkansas, Texas A&M, and (likely) Georgia.
2. Ohio State: 2-1
Chase Young is back in a big way this weekend against Penn State. But honestly, this matchup against Penn State would’ve probably been easily handled without the all american defensive end taking the field this Saturday. This team lands at second most likely on this list for one reason, and one reason only. Assistant Athletic Director Urban Meyer. You really expect me to think that Meyer isn’t calling plays behind the scenes at Ohio State this season? Sure.
3. Clemson: whatever.
Yeah, Clemson will make the playoff I guess. Do they deserve to? Sure, I guess. They look good, don’t get me wrong. But if you give me 24 hours, a recruiting budget comparable to that of Clemson’s, and the Tiger’s schedule then I could also make the playoff this season. So yeah, we’ll see them in the playoff. But meh.
4. Georgia: maybe.
Georgia has to win the SEC Championship game to make the playoff this season. This could happen, I guess. But I mean really anything COULD happen when you think about it. I mean a lead editor at ESPN could read this article and hire me on the spot, but will they? I think you get the point.
5. Alabama: Geez, I hope not.
I think I speak for everyone in 49 states in this country when I say this. We get it. You haven’t ever missed a College Football Playoff. Whatever. You have the greatest coach in the history of college football, I guess. Some miracle will happen that lands Alabama in the playoff this season, but I’m going to ignore that for now and just hope that they won’t make the cut.
6. Oregon: .250
Oregon was the victim of a week one loss against Auburn, and this probably sealed their fate for this season. This loss, while realistically not awful, is starting to look worse and worse now that Auburn is a three loss team at this point in the season. Oregon is a good team and they should realistically have a shot to make the playoff this season. Will they? Who knows. Even if they don’t, you shouldn’t feel bad for this squad. They still have Nike, they still have their highlighter yellow, and they still have a mediocre coach, at best.
